Google Business Profile Tip #2: Show Up for More Jobs by Choosing the Right Primary Category

If you are not showing up for the jobs you want, your primary category may be the reason.
Many businesses choose a Google Business category that sounds correct but is too broad. When that happens, Google places you into a wider and more competitive group. That can limit how often your profile appears in searches and how many jobs you can potentially get.

Your primary category is one of the strongest signals in your Google Business Profile. It tells Google what you do and when to show your listing.
Here is the practical approach. Search your top service in Google. Look at the businesses that appear in the Map Pack. Open their profiles and check their primary category. If theirs is more specific than yours, that may explain the gap.
Your primary category should reflect the service you most want to be found for.
Secondary categories can support additional services, but the primary category carries the most weight.
Do not set it once and forget it. Categories should be reviewed as services evolve and competitors change.
Choosing the right primary category helps you show up for the right searches. Choosing the wrong one quietly limits your visibility.
We understand that reviewing competitors and evaluating category options takes time. It requires careful comparison and testing.
If you are unsure whether your primary category is helping or hurting your visibility, iBP Marketing audits and adjusts category strategy as part of our monthly management plans. If your business is not appearing where it should, we can diagnose and correct it.
